The safety and well-being of all participants in the Little League® program continues to be paramount and this course is required to be completed by all volunteers each year.
This course will teach the basics of umpiring, and aims to encourage and equip prospective and current umpires to take the diamond.
Pitching (and Catching) Rules |
Umpires usually do not worry too much about pitch counts -- that is up to the official pitch counter at the game. There are a few things we ARE responsible for as umpires:
Enforcing pitch limits: If the pitch counter lets you know that a pitcher has reached their maximum, DO NOT let that pitcher continue. (They can finish the current batter.) If the manager refuses to remove the pitcher, direct them that they must do so. If they again refuse, eject the manager. Direct the replacement to remove the pitcher. Repeat until the pitcher is replaced, or there are no more adults and the game is suspended and referred to the board.
DO NOT allow a pitcher to keep pitching after they exceed their pitch count. It does not matter if the manager disagrees with the pitch counter. They can play the game under protest, but protect the kid's arm!
Pitching and Catching: There are restrictions on pitching and catching in the same game. This is why it is very important to keep a lineup and track of pitchers and catchers in the game.
